This
expedition takes you to southern Venezuela, right into the Gran
Sabana. It is here, where giant table
mountains called “Tepuyes”
sit amongst breathtaking green valleys, crystal clear waterfalls and rivers
which seem to spring from everywhere.
Because
of this super abundance of water, many plants and animals have been at
home here for millions of years. Many scientists come here in search for
new discoveries and to find out about the secrets of the “Lost World”,
that Arthur Conan Doyle writes about. 600 Million years is worth a trip
to find out about it, right?
The
Salto Angel is one of the highlights in Venezuelan Tourism. Mainly during
the rainy season ( June-November) the fall is absolutely breathtaking.
Due to this fact, there are lots of visitors. We try to avoid tourist crowds
and therefore start our trip in Kavak (Kamarata) instead of Canaima, from
where all excursions start, because of its nearness to the fall.
We
use indian curiaras (boats) to go down the Akanan and the Carrao river.
Our trip continues for a few days, we sleep in hammocks equipped with mosquito
nets in simple camps along the way and unfortunately will have to do without
ice cold beer or drinks for a few days.
It
truly is one of the most beautiful tours which we offer to our clients,
always surrounded by table mountains and the endless Gran Sabana!
This
tour can only

1st
day Flight from Ciudad Bolívar to Kavac
Flight
from Ciudad Bolívar in a small propeller airplane to Kavak. If the
weather permits we will have a first look of the Gran Sabana and its spectacular
table-mountains, called Tepuyes. Kavak, a typical Indian village
of the Pemon tribe, is situated on the eastern wall of the mighty
Auyantepuy, mountain from where the famous Angel Waterfall thunders 3,240
feet into the wild jungle and which is going to be our final destination.
Meanwhile we visit the cave of Kavak in the afternoon, always startled
by the power of water all around us. In order to get to the impressive
waterfall we have to swim through a small canyon. Here in Kavak we will
spend the night.
2nd
day: Boat trip on the Acanan river to the Iwana Meru camp
In
the morning we hike or drive to the nearby village of Kamarata, from where
our trip by Indian boat begins. This black-water river Acanan introduces
us into a magic world of wild jungle, changing to open desert like plains
always in company of its majestic “Kings” the Table mountains. We
spend the night at camp Iwana Meru.
3rd
day: Boat trip on the Acanan River to Camp Arenal
After
breakfast we’ll be back on the water, heading for rio Carrao. The fascinating
scenery all around us presents another of the giants around here:
the Wei-tepuy. But this is not all the excitement for the day since we
have to pass some tricky rapids on the Carrao river in order to get to
the camp. Devils canyon is the name!
4th
day : Hiking to Salto Angel.
Better
be in good shape today. Early we start our trip and soon will meet up with
a small river called Churun, which will be our guide to lead us to Salto
Angel. Our speed depends a lot on the water level and in case of low water
we have to get out and walk while the Indios drag the boat over the
problem spots. Our walk takes us for about 1,5 hr. through thick and fantastic
jungle where tall Ferns compete with even taller Palms entwined by
Orchids and Bromelias and other rarities. As we reach some kind of a plateau
we can see the Fall in all its beauty and splendor. Well, all this effort
and excitement calls for a refreshing bath down below in some nearby lake.
After this we return to our camp in the afternoon and spend another night.
5th
day: Boat trip to Canaima & Flight to Ciudad Bolívar
We
go downstream on the river Carrao. We pass the island of the orchids and
the ¨Pozo de la Felicidad¨-Fall until we get to the upper part
of the ¨Hacha¨-Falls in Canaima. Visit of Salto Sapo.
