The Canaima Park which has an area of 3 mil.hectares is located to the south-east of the Orinoco River in the Bolivar State, known as the Guayana Highland and is a part of the Guayana Shield whose rocks are the oldest in the world. This area of extensive savannahs is interrupted by tabular formations called “tepuys” which high plateaus and policromatic vertical walls composed of sandstone, quarz and granite. These curious and spectacular mountains characterize the park. Each “tepuy” constitutes an authentic “ecological island “ and owing to it’s altitude and isolation each one has it’s own endemic flora. One of the bigest tepuy is the Auyantepuy,3.000 FT high  and with area of 700 sq.km.From here emerge the ANGEL FALLS,the highest in the world. The vegetation around the lower parts of the savannahs and valleys which are between 300 and 600 m.is herbaceous with “moriche” palms on the banks of the rivers. We find tropical humid wood at 1.000 to 1.300m. and on the top we can find typical types of plants like liquens, bromeliaceous and orchids, which do not excist in other parts(Auyansua,Tepuia,Mellophiton).
